The endometrium is the tissue lining the inside of the uterus. A small sample is examined under a microscope to investigate the cause of bleeding or ultrasound findings.

Ultrasound and biopsy provide different information.
Ultrasound looks at the thickness and shape of the endometrium, and a biopsy analyzes cells and tissue from the sample. It is considered when further evaluation is needed, such as for abnormal vaginal bleeding or bleeding after menopause. Being advised to have this test does not mean a cancer diagnosis.

You will hear about methods such as passing a thin instrument through the cervix to collect a portion of the endometrium. Whether anesthesia or fasting is needed depends on the actual plan.
Collection and assessment
During collection, menstrual-like discomfort or bleeding can occur. Please tell us right away if the pain is severe.
Results and next steps
We check whether the sample is adequate and review the results. If the amount is insufficient or symptoms continue, a repeat or different test may be needed.

Checking for bleeding, pain, and infection
Pain and light bleeding can occur, and infection, uterine injury, or other problems may rarely occur. Contact the testing facility if you have heavy bleeding, worsening abdominal pain, or fever.

Does this exam remove all of the endometrium?
This is a test that collects a tissue sample for diagnosis. Its purpose differs from other treatments such as endometrial ablation, so confirm which method will be used.
If the test is normal, is it okay to just watch the bleeding?
