Thyroid Ultrasound
We examine the shape of the thyroid and any nodules, and explain how this differs from thyroid function tests.
A test that looks at appearance is different from a hormone test.
Thyroid ultrasound checks the size and structure of the thyroid at the front of the neck, and the features of any nodules. How much thyroid hormone is produced is assessed with a blood test, so a normal ultrasound alone does not determine thyroid function.

Previous results
Please bring ultrasound, blood test, and fine-needle aspiration results, along with treatment records.
Personal medical history
We review thyroid disease and surgery, medicines you take, family history, and any history of radiation treatment to the neck.
If a nodule is seen, the next step is decided based on its features.
When observation is needed
Based on size, imaging features, previous changes, and other factors, we discuss whether follow-up is needed and at what interval.
When further evaluation is needed
We may consider whether tissue or cell testing, such as fine-needle aspiration, is needed. Not every nodule is cancer, and not every nodule needs to be removed right away.
Having more tests is not always better.
Individual need
We decide whether testing is needed based on symptoms, risk, and previous findings. We do not advise that a thyroid exam is required just because you are having a breast ultrasound.

Does ultrasound confirm whether it is cancer?
Imaging can help assess risk, but additional checks such as cytology or tissue testing may be done if needed. Please have the results and the next plan explained together.
