Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection and inflammation of the upper genital tract, including the uterus and fallopian tubes. Symptoms vary, so it is hard to judge from a single test. Examination findings, tests, possible pregnancy, and other causes of pain are reviewed together.

When the pain started and where it is
Please tell us whether it started suddenly or gradually worsened, and whether the pain is on one side or more widespread.
Bleeding, discharge, and menstruation
We review your last period, bleeding, and changes in discharge. Please also mention recent procedures or treatment for infection.
Sexual contact and possible pregnancy
We check this to arrange needed infection tests and to assess other causes. If something is hard to say, you can ask for a separate discussion.
After treatment starts, we check how you respond.
Antibiotic treatment plan
Treatment is chosen based on the examination and the suspected cause. Please receive guidance on the type of medication, how to take it, and when to return.
Checking symptom changes
We check whether you are improving during treatment, and reassess if there is no improvement or if symptoms worsen. Do not stop or change medication on your own.
Reinfection and follow-up care
Depending on the causative infection, you will receive guidance on partner care and when to resume sexual activity. We also discuss possible aftereffects such as infertility and chronic pelvic pain.
Frequently Asked Questions
If a test is negative, does that mean it is not pelvic inflammatory disease?
A negative result on one infection test does not determine the overall picture. Symptoms, the examination, and other test results are interpreted together.
